Explore the Unique Bond Between Humans and Dogs Through Art at PAMA
BRAMPTON, ON (May 16, 2024) – PAMA unveils its latest paw-some exhibit "Oh My Dog!" opening this May. This exhibit celebrates the amazing world of our canine companions and the unique bond between humans and dogs!

This exhibition will showcase a selection of historical and contemporary works by diverse artists of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds who have focused on the dog as a symbol. It will consider a variety of perspectives on the dog's relationship with humans around cultural identity, social and aesthetic values, ethics, animal rights, lifestyle, and consumerism. Uncover the diverse roles of dogs throughout history in art!

May 24, 7 – 9 p.m.

In recent decades, many aspects of human-animal relations focusing on the dogs’ roles in cultures have received significant scholarly attention. I have been drawn to research focused on analyzing canine cognitive abilities, their behaviour, as well as focusing on other fields of studies which examine our interspecies relationship with this companion animal. Humans have a special relationship with this companion species. Dogs have been integrated into societies through their various roles. These include maintaining a social presence as a pet or fulfilling a utilitarian function as a working animal. My intention with this project is to examine these various functions within cultures

n partnership with the CONTACT Photography Festival, PAMA presents Kimutsik (dog team), 2023 by Glenn Gear. This artwork portrays untethered dogs running freely and returning as spirits set against a kaleidoscopic backdrop of beadwork crafted and photographed by the artist. It is based on a time in the mid-twentieth century when the Canadian government enforced harsh laws that saw the senseless demise of many Inuit-owned dogs as a way to push Inuit into settlements.
Kimutsik is on display on PAMA's outdoor banners.

Pet Portrait Painting (Adult Art Workshop)
Saturday, June 1, 1 - 4:30 p.m.
Bring your furry friend to life in this workshop! Mississauga-based artist Christine Lobo will guide you through a pet portrait workshop using acrylic paints. You can bring a portrait of your own cat or dog or follow along with Christine. If you are bringing your own image, make sure it is a clear photo with natural lighting. Registration required. Public: $17.50 +HST, Members: $15 +HST.
Dog Printmaking with PAMA in partnership with Town of Caledon
Friday, June 7, 1 - 3 p.m.
Inspired by the exhibition Oh My Dog! on display at PAMA, join us for an exciting dog printmaking workshop celebrating senior's month! We’ll explore unique printmaking techniques as we design one-of-a-kind artwork featuring our furry friends.
Location: This program will take place at Margaret Dunn Valleywood Library and Community Room. Registration required with Town of Caledon.
Playful Transitions and Variations of Down Dog and Up Dog in Yoga
Saturday, July 13, 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.
Downward and Upward facing dog are yoga poses that originated from observing dogs and appreciating the gracious way they stretch and move. Sometimes, teachers call these poses using shortcuts: down-dog and up-dog.
This one-hour and 20-minute class led by Tere Lopez will navigate through the dog poses (up and down dog) carefully and playfully. We will use them as a baseline to transition to other basic postures and explore different variations of it, some simple dogs, soft and quiet, and others funky and revolutionary! With this consistent body canine imitation, we may discover what humans have to do with dogs and each other.
The class has a maximum of 20 participants. Each one needs to bring a mat and any other yoga props required.
Registration required. Public: $17.50 +HST, Members: $15 +HST.
