Colored Girls

Colored Girls and Colored Walls is a photography series that I started in 2017. This collective began as an online community of colored girls from around the world to use the hashtag in combination with murals they come across. I recently started to do free photo sessions within the GTA to amplify the voices of colored girls and to give them a platform as I interviewed them during the photoshoot. This online collective represents diversity, identity, transgressing barriers and overcoming society's perspective of colored girls.

Amanda Busby

Dizzy Spell

When I create my art, my goal is to present something that is enjoyable to look at and nothing more. I’ve never felt comfortable with trying to explain the meaning behind the work, and always believed that a piece of artwork should be able to speak for itself. When you view my work, I hope that you’ll come to your own interpretations of my art and enjoy it all the same.

Epirota Phlanx

Invading an Empire is a painting exploring the idea of war based on narratives gathered from films, my imagination and research on the Peloponnesian era. This painting was created through the process of searching, as an artist I never start knowing how the final story will be. Rather, I discover the content as I paint. An impasto technique was used to create this painting which places emphasis on the materiality and heaviness of the paint itself.

Ayisha Salamath

Untitled

This painting recreates the embroidery patterns that originated in the Uzbekistan and Tajikistan region, called Suzani. Suzani originates from the Persian word suzan, meaning needlework. The embroidery pattern is usually made from silk woven onto a large cotton cloth. These decorative patterns would be created for adorning the walls and verandas of houses and could also be laid on beds. The designs are characterized by large and vibrant-coloured floral motifs, depicting irises, carnations and tulips. Other designs reference cosmological motifs, such as the moon and stars. Here, this embroidery pattern was recreated using vibrant-coloured acrylic paints on a black canvas background.

Brianna Boateng

Story of Black History

Story of Black History depicts what it means to be African - its culture, history, art, royalty, agriculture, family, nature, and beauty. We do not come from slaves, we come from human beings who made a purpose. The images in this piece held me and provided new founded inspiration from what I’ve witnessed, and I wanted to put my idea of that in my art.

Chelsea Coleman

Queen

Queen is a stand-alone project and was Chelsea's first completed attempt at scratchboard art. This piece was inspired by the strong Black women that Chelsea looks up to. This work represents embracing Black women, their resilience and the features that make them unique and beautiful.

Daniela Bonilla Flamenco

Self Actualization

Self Actualization is inspired by the prompt “the most beautiful thing in life”. I explore the process of self actualization, which is the state in which people are at their very best. Self actualized people are accepting of themselves and others and can form deep relationships.

Dhakshanya AnandBabu Mahalakshmi

The Hiding Puppy

The Hiding Puppy is inspired by my adoration of different flowers and the concept of a semi-natural look. I have used many vibrant colors to allow the flowers to stand-out. The many colors and types of flowers represent different emotions and meanings. The sunflowers represent adoration and loyalty, and the vibrant yellow color of the sunflower symbolizes happiness and creativity.

Esther Yeboah

Wavy sea, sailors and sharks

The inspiration for Wavy sea, sailors and sharks is the ongoing whale hunting that is happening in Japan. In my painting, there is a stormy sea with a boat that is carrying a dead whale. This painting represents hope and struggle. Hope, as it turned out better than expected and a reminder to have faith in myself. Struggle, as it was a very difficult process filled with self-doubt and frustration.

Art is a big part in my childhood and continues in adulthood to express myself in different types of art mediums such as, acrylic and watercolor. Mental health and creativity go hand in hand and can be a coping technique for many people. I want to be the advocate for people living with mental health challenges and show them there are outlets.

Overflowing Petals

Overflowing Petals is a work in a three-part series that was created in Jaylon Pascual's grade 12 year. This piece specifically told the story of someone expressing their thoughts and how that feels.
