Annie May Johnston (1889-1987)
Quilter
Annie May Johnston sewed her first quilt in 1906 when she was 15 years old. After her 80th birthday, she decided to “do a few quilts” and sewed more than 100 to add to her already extensive collection.
She designed many of the quilt patterns herself, and also used liquid embroidery to paint images of Malton landmarks on some of her quilts. She wanted to help preserve their history, saying,
All these little old churches and schools are down and these young people don’t know anything about it.
