Home Safety
Here are a few things to be aware of in your surroundings and changes you can make to prevent a fall:
Lighting
- Keep paths clear and well lit
- Place night-lights along the path to the bathroom
Carpets and Rugs
- Remove loose carpets and rugs that could slide or bunch up
- Clear objects from stairs and high traffic areas in and around the home
Shoes
- Wear low-heeled footwear with non-slip soles
Walking Aids
- A cane or walker should be fitted for the person’s height
Handrails
- Install handrails on both sides of the stairway
Grab Bars and Bathmats
- Install grab bars around the tub and toilet
- Place a rubber bath mat in the tub
