35 years of supporting Peel residents in their daily travel activities
TransHelp was established in 1981 as a fully accessible transportation service operated by the Region of Peel. TransHelp operated that year with just 6 modified vans, 6 full-time and 2 part-time drivers; one manager and two clerks provided operational support.
Today, TransHelp delivers the highest number of trips to residents in the Greater Toronto Area, outside of Toronto, with approximately a half million trips delivered in 2015. We operate seven days a week in conjunction with conventional transit services. Over 100 dedicated employees work with residents and partners, to deliver safe, accessible transportation across the Region. Congratulations to the TransHelp team who came together on December 2 to celebrate this milestone.
What's next for TransHelp?
As we celebrate, we also get ready for changes ahead:
- In 2017, TransHelp services will comply with new Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) guidelines and begin providing services to Region of Peel residents with cognitive, sensory or physical disabilities not able to use conventional public transportation services some or all of the time.
- At the same time, the way that the TransHelp team reviews client applications will change. This is an Ontario-wide, legislated change.
- The Region will launch a new website to support an online application process for new clients.
