2018 Election of the Regional Chair

The next municipal election will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018.

In the next election, the Peel Regional Chair will be elected by general vote.

This means the candidates for Regional Chair will be on the ballot in 2018 and residents of Peel will vote for their preferred candidate.

Role of the Regional Chair

The Regional Chair is the head of the Regional Council and is the Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Corporation.

The duties of the Regional Chair are described in the Municipal Act, 2001. The Regional Chair:

  • acts as Chief Executive Officer of the municipality,
  • presides over Council meetings,
  • provides leadership to Council,
  • represents the municipality at official functions, and
  • carries out the duties of the head of Council under this or any other Act.

The Chair is also required to:

  • be an official signing officer for the Corporation,
  • represent the Region in dealings with other levels of government,
  • act as spokesperson for the Region in matters of policy and public issues, and
  • be the official representative of the Region in greeting visiting dignitaries, either in a ceremonial capacity or investigating business opportunities.
