Transportation Management Associations
Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) are non-profit, public/private partnerships. They serve as transportation consultants for businesses wishing to implement transportation demand management programs such as carpooling, vanpooling, telework, transit discount programs, biking, walking, and parking management. TMAs work with local governments, transit agencies, and other transportation providers to promote transportation services.
Smart Commute strives to make commuting easier, cheaper and less harmful to the environment. More than 305 employers throughout the GTHA are Smart Commute workplaces.

- Corporate Carpool Zone Program
Carpool Zone can help you find the right person for your carpool, or find and choose a carpool lot as your starting point then find matches based on this location. Benefits include using carpool lanes and parking in reserved carpool spaces. Carpool Zone users saved over $10 million and prevented 24,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in the past five years.
- Discount Transit Program
Smart Commute employers can offer a Discount Transit Program through Transit Zone, a special service that enables employers to qualify for a matching discount when they invest in public transit for their staff.
- Biking and Walking
Smart Commute provides employers a framework to help incentivize staff to bike or walk to work. Use the Walk + Roll Peel Trails Map to find bike lanes and hiking trails, or look for your neighborhood's walkscore and discover the great places around you. Biking and walking have numerous health, environmental, economic, and financial benefits.
- Emergency Ride Home
Emergency Ride Home allows registered staff to request reimbursement for their transportation costs in the event of an unforeseen emergency, provided that they commute to work by a sustainable mode of transportation on a regular basis.
- Telework (work from home) Program
Telework is a growing trend and a shared benefit. Employers save money on parking, office space, equipment and training. Employees are more efficient, save on commuting costs, and enjoy a better work-life balance.
