The Study

The Region of Peel is initiating a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study for the expansion of the Silverthorn Pumping Station and Reservoir located on Bloor Street in Mississauga.

The proposed project includes increasing pumping capacity and expansion of the existing reservoir, the construction of an overflow management facility, a storm water pond, a new storm sewer on Bloor Street, and complete replacement of all electrical systems. With the exception of the new storm sewer on Bloor Street, all other required upgrades are expected to be completed within land currently owned by the Region.

The pumping and storage capacity expansion was identified in the Region’s Water and Wastewater Master Plan for the Lake Based System 2013 update. The facilities electrical systems upgrades were identified in 2016. The required upgrades will be completed to meet the approved projected water demands within the serviced areas.

The Process

The purpose of the Class EA study is to assess the environmental impacts of the required expansion and upgrades of the Silverthorn facility and select the preferred solution for the required upgrades. Alternative solutions will be analyzed and evaluated based on the following:

  • Engineering and public safety
  • Socio-cultural environment
  • Natural environment
  • Economic considerations

Public Consultation

Public consultation is an integral component of this Class EA study. The Region wants to ensure that anyone interested in the study has an opportunity to get involved and provide input. A Public Information Centre (PIC) is planned to allow those who are interested to learn more about the project and provide comments on the various alternatives and the preliminary preferred alternative solution.
