In support of the Region’s organizational commitment to create supportive environments for healthy living, the corporate Smoking in the Workplace policy (HR03-05) is being updated to provide 100 per cent smoke-free worksites; prohibiting smoking and vaping on the grounds of Regional worksites, including parking lots, owned or operated by the Region of Peel. The primary rationale for amending the policy is to protect Regional employees (including contractors and vendors), volunteers and visitors from the health implications associated with second-hand smoke exposure, create a supportive environment for those who want to quit smoking and discourage smoking initiation by denormalizing tobacco use.
The amended policy is effective as of January 1, 2017. Further information is available on the Regional website. Removal of cigarette butt receptacles and installation of permanent building signage will occur over the course of December 2016 – January 2017. The Peel Outdoor Smoking By-law is still in effect, which bans smoking in a nine metre radius from building entrances and exits.
The following community supports are available for individuals who may be interested in quitting smoking:
Smokers' Helpline offers great tips and links to resources including telephone, online and text messaging quit smoking programs.
