Work zone safety
Work zones can be difficult to move through, so it’s important that all road users are informed, cautious and alert when traveling through a work zone. A work zone is an area on, under or adjacent to a road where construction or maintenance is happening. Work zones can also take place within boulevards, on medians and cross driveways and paths and may require shut down of a travelling lane.
Work zones can affect:
- bike lanes
- number of lanes
- sidewalks and trails
- crosswalks
- speed limits
- turning ability
- visibility within the zone
Every day, people in our community are working on or near roads, and they’re counting on you to slow down and travel with caution.
Work zone safety is a shared responsibility. Peel, its contractors, work crews and all road users (drivers, pedestrians, cyclists) can work together to help protect everyone on the road.
The Region of Peel follows the Vision Zero approach to road safety – the vision that “no loss of life is acceptable on our roadways”.
Let’s all get home safely by:
- Being aware. Pay attention to the signage in work zones. Signs provide important information. They warn road users of the road conditions ahead, and direct you on how to drive through the work zone.
- Staying focused. Keep your eyes on the road. Avoid distractions such as cellphones and eating.
- Keeping a distance. Lane closures, reduced speeds and changes to traffic patterns are common in work zones. Be alert and expect the unexpected.
- Being flexible. Avoid work zones wherever possible and consider taking a different route.
- Slowing down. Slow down as you approach workers, give them room to work and be ready to stop.
Driving through work zones
When driving through work zones, slow down and pay attention to all signage and instructions about how to move safely through the area.
If signage directs you to change lanes or a lane is closed up ahead, signal and merge into the next lane when it’s safe to do so.
Lane closures and reduced speeds are common in work zones. Always slow down and keep your distance. If there is no speed limit posted in a work zone, follow the regular posted speed limit on the roadway but drive with caution.
Construction zones in Peel
Construction projects are expected on Peel roads in numerous areas as a whole. This construction will support important services such as water, wastewater and transportation.
The work we do today to maintain and develop new infrastructure will help us adjust to future growth and continue to build our Community for Life.
