Region of Peel Remains Committed to Continuous Improvement

Continuous Improvement Program Finds Ways to Save Money and Minimize Impacts to Residents

BRAMPTON, ON. (Oct. 24, 2017) – The Region of Peel remains committed to delivering efficient, high quality services that provide value for our residents. This commitment ensures that the Region remains innovative to improve community outcomes.

The Region developed a Continuous Improvement Program to ensure client needs and user experiences are the focus of improvement initiatives.

"This program ensures services are delivered effectively and in the most efficient manner possible – reducing the need for increased taxes on residents and businesses in Peel," said Stephen VanOfwegen, Commissioner of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. "There has been a cumulative cost savings and cost avoidance totalling $198 million for tax supported programs and over $74 million for the utility rate supported programs. We are continually looking for ways to eliminate waste, optimize value for the taxpayer and improve our community outcomes through a robust continuous improvement program.  Savings to date demonstrate this strong commitment."
Over the past 18 months, 20 improvement initiatives were completed – with cost savings of over $3.6 million and cost avoidance of $4.2 million. Some of the initiatives completed include:

  • Increasing the number of children screened for required dental care by 76 per cent (10,430  children)
  • Improving communications for Income Support and Housing Support clients regarding closures, major events and appointment reminders
  • Procuring 3rd party service delivery for 211 services which generated a cost avoidance for the Region of $389,000
  • Decreased hydro consumption levels and costs by reducing loads on the top six days of the summer (qualifying for lower rates) and by using internally produced electricity (biogas and excess hydraulic energy) resulting in cost savings of $2.8 million annually

The financial benefits achieved from the Continuous Improvement Program will be reflected in the 2018 budget report to Council on November 2.

The Region of Peel works with residents and partners to create a healthy, safe and connected community for life for more than 1.4 million people and approximately 143,000 businesses in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga and the Town of Caledon. Peel's services touch the lives of residents every day. For more information about the Region of Peel, explore peelregion.ca and follow us on Twitter at @regionofpeel.
