More about the International Day of Disabled Persons

The Joint Peel-Caledon Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) invites you to celebrate the 2007 International Day of Disabled Persons (IDDP) on December 3, 2007. IDDP is aimed at mobilizing support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It is also a great opportunity to recognize important accessibility achievements and learn about employment accessibility initiatives underway.

The 2007 IDDP theme is Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities, highlighting opportunities and initiatives for the economic integration of persons with disabilities. In Canada, the unemployment rate for persons with disabilities aged 15–64 is 25.5 per cent, in spite of their collective purchasing power of $25 billion.

This is why we have an important law in Ontario called the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA). It’s the first of its kind in Canada. The purpose of this law is to ensure that Ontarians with disabilities have full access to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment and building structures by January 1, 2025.

Further, the Act ensures that both public and private sector organizations that provide goods and services to the public meet certain accessibility standards in five important areas:

The AAC consists of 11 members who meet once a month to assist the Region in its efforts to incorporate accessibility into the services and programs it provides. The AAC has partnered with this year’s sponsoring Regional departments (Corporate Services and Employee and Business Services) to organize a series of events for staff and citizens in celebration of IDDP and recently released the 2007 Accessibility Plan.
