Freedom of Information requests

You have the right to request information from the Peel Region.

We follow Ontario laws that guide us in how we collect, keep, protect, and release information.

You can submit a Freedom of Information request for any information held by Peel Region.

You can also request a correction to your personal information.

Anyone living or working in Peel can access this service.

What you need

If you’re requesting the information for yourself, you need a written request or a completed Freedom of Information Request form.

If you’re requesting the information for someone else, written proof from this person must be submitted with the request.

If you’re requesting a correction to your personal information, you’ll need to provide which record, form, or file contains the incorrect information.  

Fees

The application fee is $5.

You may need to pay additional fees.

If you choose to receive electronic copies of records, you may be able to avoid several of the following fees.

How to apply

Step 1:
Fill out and print the Freedom of Information request form.

Step 2:
Pay the $5 application fee. This can be paid by cash or cheque. Cash is only accepted in person. Cheques should be made payable to: Region of Peel.

Step 3:
Submit your complete Freedom of Information request form and application in-person or by mail to:

If you’re unable to use the form, you can submit your request in writing.

Include the following:

If the request is being submitted by your lawyer, they will need to provide a signed authorization and direction to the Region of Peel, naming your lawyer.

All Freedom of Information requests are subject to the following Notice of Collection:

Personal information is collected and will be used for the purpose of responding to your request pursuant to section 17 of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Questions about this collection should be directed to the Region of Peel’s Manager of Access to Information and Privacy, Office of the Regional Clerk, 10 Peel Centre Drive, Suite A, 5th Floor, Brampton, ON L6T 4B9 at 905-791-7800 ext. 4095.

Once your copies of the records are ready and the fees have been paid, we will deliver the records to you.

If you’re requesting access to your own personal information, you will have to provide proof of your identity prior to any records being released.

More information

Once we get your request, we’ll send you a letter of acknowledgment.

We'll give you an answer within 30 days of receiving the request.

If it's reasonable, you can get an extension. This can happen if:

  • The request is for extensive records.
  • The request needs to be clarified before it can be processed.
  • There are other parties that need to be informed about the request.

Your request can be denied if the information falls under any of the following:

Mandatory exemptions

Access to a record will be denied if the record contains:

  • Information received in confidence from another government.
  • Financial or commercial information supplied in confidence where providing the information could harm the interests of another party.
  • Personal information about individuals other than yourself, if the disclosure would constitute an unjustified invasion of personal privacy.

Discretionary exemptions

Requests to access some records may be denied by Peel Region if they contain:

  • Draft by-laws and records of closed meetings of Council or its committees.
  • Advice or recommendations of an employee or consultant.
  • Law enforcement matters.
  • Information that could harm the financial or other interests of Peel Region.
  • Information under solicitor-client privilege, such as legal advice.
  • Information which could endanger the health or safety of an individual.
  • Information already available to the public through another means, or soon to be published.

If your request is denied you can have it reviewed by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.

You can write to them within 30 days of getting a decision from Peel Region at:

Include in your letter:

  • the file number cited in your decision letter
  • a copy of the decision letter
  • a copy of your original request for information
  • A mandatory appeal fee must be sent with your letter:
  • $10.00 for requests where records contain your personal information
  • $25.00 for all other information requests
  • A cheque or money order made payable to: Minister of Finance.

You can get information from Peel Region in the following ways:

  1. Website: You can look through Peel Region's website.
  2. Open data: The Peel Data Centre is a network of Peel Region resources with a wide range of data on topics.
  3. Routine disclosure: Many Regional program areas can provide records to you through an informal process. For examples of records available through routine disclosure, review the User Fees and Charges By-Law.
  4. Freedom of Information: You can submit a Freedom of Information request.
  5. If you are member of law enforcement: Complete the Law Enforcement Request for Personal Information Form to request information held by Peel Region.
