Mayfield Seniors Apartments project profile

Opened in 2019, Mayfield Seniors Apartments created 60 units for seniors aged 65 years and older. The building is located at 12600 Kennedy Road in Caledon.

Mayfield Seniors Apartments is an example of a partnership between the public and private sectors. Peel Region partnered with the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada to build this project. The land for this project was given to Peel by the Town of Caledon and local land owners as part of the Mayfield West Secondary Plan, where 2 acres of land was provided.

The building was specifically designed with seniors' mobility in mind, with many features, including 2 rooms on site for residents to store bicycles and scooters.

Another highlight of the building is the unique interior courtyard which includes raised planters for residents to plant vegetables and flowers, while providing security for the residents.

"There are lots of great features at Mayfield Seniors Apartments. The seniors particularly enjoy the gardens where they can grow produce,” said Steven Dickson, Director, Housing Development Office.

Other features include a large multipurpose room with a library and kitchen, which connects to the interior courtyard. There are also 2 multipurpose rooms that can be used for doctor visits and other activities.

Walking distance to shops, the Southfields Community Centre, and Brampton Transit, the building is ideal for its residents. Mayfield Seniors Apartments is a universally accessible building with grab bars in the bathrooms and 3 barrier-free units.

Mayfield Seniors Apartments was designed to fulfill Peel Region's outcomes outlined in the Peel Housing and Homelessness Plan and supports Regional Council’s previous direction through the Aging Population Steering Committee. As a result, 2 acres of land were dedicated to the project.

The project began in the summer of 2016, when Peel staff examined how to best use provincial funding for affordable housing needs. In September 2016, the project was approved. A year later, a 3-storey building with 60 units was approved by Regional Council. Construction began in December 2017, with tenants moving in July 2019.

Peel partnered with the Government of Canada for the project. We contributed $13.1 million, and the Canadian government generously provided $9 million. We're thankful for their support.

A name connected to the past

In 2018, the building was named Mayfield Seniors Apartments, after the area's community and history. English immigrants named the area after Mayfield Village, East Sussex, England and first used "Mayfield" as a community name when the post office opened in 1853. The name is currently used for the Mayfield United Church, Mayfield Secondary School and Mayfield Recreation Centre in the area.

Efficient and sustainable

Mayfield Seniors Apartments is highly energy efficient. The project team received a grant for meeting targets, ensuring sustainability.

The building was designed to highlight affordability and sustainability, adopting innovative affordable housing design solutions and design principles.
