Are You Really Ready for Motherhood?

You might always have known you wanted to have a baby "someday".

Whether to have a baby — and when — is one of the biggest decisions a woman has to make. Motherhood is a lifetime commitment, so you owe it to yourself, your partner and your baby to be emotionally, physically and financially prepared before trying to conceive.

Ask yourself these questions to help you decide if you’re ready to begin your journey towards motherhood.

  • Do you like children?
  • How do you feel about having a child around all the time?
  • Who are your role models?
  • Can you identify yourself as a "mother"?
  • Which skills can you share with and teach to your child?

Emotional/Lifestyle Considerations

  • Do you welcome the opportunity of falling in love with your child?
  • What kind of time and space do you need for yourself?
  • Are you ready to totally turn your priorities upside down?
  • Are you ready to make family your priority, followed by work then social life/ personal time?
  • Are you ready to change your daily routine to meet your baby’s needs?
  • Are you patient enough to deal with the noise and the confusion and the 24-hour a day responsibility?

Financial Considerations

  • Could you handle a child and a job at the same time?
  • Do you want to be a working mother or a stay-at-home mother?
  • Do you qualify for maternity leave?
  • Can you afford to support a child?

Physical Considerations

  • Do you have any health issues that might affect your ability to get pregnant?
  • Are you willing to exercise regularly?
  • Are you willing to eat healthier foods?
  • Will you remember to take a prenatal vitamin every day?
  • Are you willing to stop drinking alcohol or use recreational drugs?
