Road maintenance keeps roadways in good condition and road users safe.

Peel Region road maintenance service levels

Regional maintenance service levels are established based on legislation, community expectations, and reducing risk.

Maintenance activities are carried out in spring, summer, and fall to extend the life of the roadway assets. Activities are coordinated out of our 2 maintenance yards: Copper Road Yard in the south and Victoria Yard in the north.

Culvert and storm water maintenance

Removal of garbage and digging out ditches ensures that water can flow freely through storm sewers, catch basins, ditches, and culverts. Keeping these storm water controls open means less flooding during heavy rain events.

Litter pick up and grass cutting

Grass cutting on roadsides and boulevards in urban areas is on a scheduled rotation. Rural roadsides are cut twice per year. Litter is always picked up before grass cutting.

A tree inventory has been completed, and a condition assessment throughout Peel Region is underway.

Priority hazard trees are being removed and will be programmed to be replaced. The overall condition assessment will be used for the development of a comprehensive forestry management plan and targeted actions to ensure that our trees and shrubs not only survive, but also thrive.

Safety barriers

Safety barriers or guardrails are designed to separate vehicles from non-traversable slopes or fixed objects such as a hydro pole. Safety barriers need regular maintenance and may need repair as the result of a collision.

Tree trimming, planting, and maintenance

We trim tree branches that are blocking traffic signals and signs.

Crack sealing

Crack sealing is a preventative maintenance treatment applied to the road surface to address pavement distress that occurs as asphalt ages. Yearly crack sealing helps prevent water and debris from entering cracks and extends the life of the asphalt. Treatment is scheduled between May and August. The dates may vary due to weather.

Pavement markings

Pavement markings are used to provide guidance and information to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists within the roadway. Most Regional roads support high volumes of truck and car traffic. This means that the pavement markings wear fast and become hard to see, sometimes within one season.

Peel Region has a yearly program for the re-painting of pavement markings. Our contractor works on re-painting lines within the months of May to November, from Sunday night to Friday morning, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This means that at times, lanes or intersections may be temporarily blocked or closed (or both), for up to 2 hours to complete the work. Depending the weather and schedule, we may allow our contractors to work weekends.

If you are driving and approach a truck re-painting lines, stay well back or choose an alternate route to avoid contact with the fresh or wet paint.
