Preserving the Cheltenham Badlands - Parking Lot Update
Caledon’s Cheltenham Badlands temporarily closed: Plan in development to protect rare natural landscape
At the end of May 2015, a protective fence will be erected along Olde Baseline Road in the Town of Caledon, temporarily closing the Cheltenham Badlands to visitors - while a long-term plan guiding future conservation and public access to the site is under development. Temporary closure of the Badlands will not affect sections of the Bruce Trail running through other areas of the property, which will remain open to hikers.
For more information on the closure, visit Ontario Heritage Trust.
The Cheltenham Badlands on Olde Base Line Road is one of the best examples of Badland topography in Ontario and a major tourist attraction. The area’s popularity has increased in recent years because of population growth in the surrounding area, word of mouth and social media. The increasing numbers of visitors led to safety concerns due to the large number of cars parking along the road adjacent to the site, as well as increased foot traffic and erosion along the trails, in the slopes, and in other areas.
The Parking Lot and Viewing Platform
To address the safety concerns on Olde Base Line Road, a series of alternatives were evaluated and ultimately traffic calming measures on Olde Base Line Road (incl. speed limit reduction, signage, speed humps) and building a parking lot within the site property (but not on the Badlands feature itself) was determined to be the best solution for preserving this area.
On April 24th 2014, Regional Council endorsed a plan to construct a parking lot for 33 vehicles and 2 school buses (see artist’s concept plan). The parking lot, which is scheduled to be built in 2015, will allow for a more controlled access to the Badlands and will not be built on top of the featured area. Once the proposed viewing platform is built, it will help ensure visitors enjoy the area without causing further and accelerated erosion. The current situation of people illegally parking on the narrow shoulders of Olde Base Line Road will also be addressed by physical barriers put in place to ensure no vehicles will be able to pull over and park, as they are now in front of the Badlands.
The Planning Team
The Cheltenham Badlands Management Planning Team is made up of volunteers as well as representatives from Ontario Heritage Trust (owners of the site), The Bruce Trail Conservancy (responsible for maintenance of the site), Niagara Escarpment Commission, Ministry of Natural Resources, Credit Valley Conservation, Town of Caledon and the Region of Peel. This team spent many hours over the last 5 years working to find a solution to the safety issues on Olde Base Line Road.
