Brampton, ON (June 22, 2017) Regional Council today endorsed Dr. Jessica Hopkins as the Region of Peel's new Medical Officer of Health. In her new role, Dr. Hopkins will oversee the operations of Ontario's second-largest public health unit, which administers health protection and promotion, and disease prevention services and programs to the more than 1.4 million people who live in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.

Dr. Hopkins has served as an Associate Medical Officer of Health for both Niagara Region and the City of Hamilton, supporting the areas of communicable disease control, environmental health and health promotion and wellness. She led the City of Hamilton's opioid response planning and dealt with several controversial public health issues, including a proposed gas plasma waste incinerator on Hamilton harbour.

"Dr. Hopkins is a strong leader who can effectively deal with broad, contentious issues while providing effective leadership on programs and services that support the health needs of the communities she serves," said Frank Dale, Regional Chair. "We are pleased to have someone with her talent and expertise to help shape the future of public health in Peel."

Dr. Hopkins graduated from Western University with a Doctor of Medicine and completed residencies in anaesthesia, family medicine and community medicine at McMaster University. She also completed her Master of Health Science in Community Medicine and Epidemiology at McMaster. Dr. Hopkins will be responsible for approximately 800 staff that deliver a range of services and programs that focus on health protection, promotion and disease prevention. These include communicable disease control including immunization, restaurant inspections, healthy child development, chronic disease prevention and public health clinic operations.

The Region of Peel works with residents and partners to create a healthy, safe and connected community for life for the more than 1.4 million people and approximately 143,000 businesses in the cities of Brampton and Mississauga, and the Town of Caledon. Peel's services touch the lives of residents every day. Explore peelregion.ca and follow us on Twitter at @regionofpeel for more information.
